Landslide Mitigation at NH-58, Lambagarh, Uttarakhand
Maccaferri’s sustainable solutions stabilized the Lambagarh landslide on NH-58, ensuring safe and reliable road access in Uttarakhand
The Lambagarh slide zone, located along National Highway (NH)-58 en route to the sacred Badrinath Temple in Uttarakhand, has posed significant challenges to road safety and connectivity for decades. The slopes are extremely steep, averaging 60° at the crest and 34°–38° below the road. This slip zone has been active since the 1980s, causing frequent traffic disruptions, particularly during the monsoon season. Environmental factors such as heavy rainfall, rockfalls, high seismic activity, flooding, and various anthropogenic activities have further increased the fragility of these Himalayan slopes, contributing to the high incidence of landslides in the region.
To safeguard the thousands of pilgrims traveling to Badrinath annually, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) designed a comprehensive solution to counteract destabilizing forces within the restricted roadside space. Maccaferri’s sustainable geosynthetic solutions were implemented, significantly enhancing slope stability. This intervention ensures that the road remains open and safe even during heavy rainfall, reducing risks to lives and improving traffic reliability.
Maccaferri Terramesh® system is an EPD certified modular reinforced soil wall with gabion facia, along with high-strength ParaLink® geogrids as primary reinforcement, was used to stabilize the valley-side embankment, enabling a safer realignment of the road. The wall, standing 44 m tall, was constructed using locally sourced stones and backfill materials, providing an environmentally responsible and sustainable solution. Additionally, a rockfall embankment, 320 m in length and 10 m in height, was constructed at the hillside toe using back-to-back Terramesh® units and ParaLink® reinforcement to protect the road from falling debris and rocks. As part of the project, a new flexible pavement was also laid to further enhance road safety and durability.
