Rockfall Drapery System from Maccaferri for Elevated Road in Maros, South Sulawesi

Elevated Road Maros-Camba: Security and Innovation in One Package! Confront the challenges of rocky slopes with a smart solution from Maccaferri Indonesia. The SteelGrid® HR 30 drapery system provides optimal protection with economic efficiency. Build a smart and secure future, discovering beauty within innovation.

The Elevated Road project in Maros-Camba stands as a monumental infrastructure endeavor in South Sulawesi. More than just a conventional transportation route, this elevated road signifies the progress of South Sulawesi on its journey to become the best province in Indonesia. As one of the largest elevated roads outside of Java, the project opens the gateway to smooth traffic flow, connecting several regencies such as Maros, Bone, and Sinjai. The Maros-Bone axis of the elevated road becomes the lifeline of the central economy in South Sulawesi, while also linking South Sulawesi to Southeast Sulawesi.

However, behind the brilliance of this project lies a significant challenge on the rocky slopes that requires a solution to protect against rockfall. In the period of 2017-2018, the local Public Works department sought a solution to reduce the potential danger of rockfall on cut slopes exceeding 30 meters in height. This paved the way for the innovative rockfall drapery system to address the challenges in constructing the Maros-Bone elevated road.

The Engineering team from Maccaferri Indonesia, in collaboration with the technical department of the local Public Works in Makassar, designed a rockfall drapery system that became the key to the success of the project. The chosen drapery system had to be installed covering the entire slope. The contractor opted for SteelGrid® HR 30 as the mesh material.

The decision to use the drapery system with steel mesh from Maccaferri was not solely based on its economic advantages over traditional solutions like shotcrete but also on its proven success and widespread application in various scenarios. This simple drapery system not only reduces the risk of falling rocks but is also easier to install and maintain than other alternatives.

Although straightforward, this drapery system is not merely a remedial step for shallow instabilities. Maccaferri Indonesia has developed a sophisticated calculation approach implemented in the MacRo 2 software. This approach can optimize each component of the drapery system, including mesh, supporting cables, and crest anchors while estimating maintenance needs.

As part of the monumental Maros-Camba elevated road project, this drapery system not only protects but also serves as evidence that innovation and technology can unite to create sustainable beauty. With hopes that this project brings not only traffic ease but also inspiration for future intelligent and sustainable projects nationwide.
