Revitalizing Safety on Sentani Road: Overcoming Landslide Threats with Flexible Drapery Innovation
The route connecting Sentani Airport to the downtown of Jayapura Province in Papua faces serious challenges, particularly the risk of rockslides due to the weathered conditions of the rocks in the surrounding area. The Ministry of Public Works is making efforts to enhance safety and smooth transportation flow in the region. In lieu of shotcrete, the Maccaferri drapery system with SteelGrid® HR 30 and 2.5-meter anchors has become a revolutionary solution. The success of this project not only safeguards the Sentani national road but also opens the door for similar innovations throughout the entire region. With a spirit of innovation, the Ministry of Public Works is ready to adopt the same method, bringing new hope for a safer and more resilient future for this vital route.
One crucial route linking two key points in the Jayapura province of Papua is the road connecting Sentani Airport to the downtown area of Jayapura. This route not only offers breathtaking natural scenery but also serves as the backbone for the movement of people and the economy in the region. However, the enchanting beauty of nature faces several serious challenges, particularly the risk of rockslides due to the deteriorating condition of the rocks surrounding this infrastructure. Tragic incidents over recent years have underscored the hazardousness of this route, with vehicles and users of the national road falling victim to the dangers of rockslides, emphasizing the need for prompt action to enhance safety.
The Ministry of Public Works has responded proactively to these challenges. In an effort to improve safety and ensure smooth transportation flow, innovative solutions have been implemented. Although Shotcrete has been applied as a passive protection system, it has proven to be insufficient in addressing the issue.
Opting for an alternative solution, the use of the more economical Maccaferri’s drapery system was selected. This involved utilizing SteelGrid® HR 30 combined with 2.5 meters of anchors (with a spacing of 2×2 meters) as a comprehensive solution. The goal of this solution is not only to minimize the risk of rockslides but also to reduce the maintenance costs that have been a significant financial burden.
The implementation process began with a thorough analysis using the advanced MACRO 1 software by the design team. In the first project stage, covering a total slope length of about 32 meters and a height reaching 75 meters with a horizontal inclination of up to 57°, the proposed solution felt revolutionary.
The success of this experience not only provides better protection for the Sentani national road but also opens opportunities for similar applications elsewhere. The Ministry of Public Works, driven by a spirit of innovation, is now prepared to adopt the same method to safeguard infrastructure at various points along the Sentani national road.
With these steps, we witness not only updates in safeguarding lives and property but also a transformation in our approach to natural disaster risks. Innovations like the drapery system offer new hope for a safer and more resilient future for communities relying on this vital route.
