RENO™ MATTRESS PLUS FOR SPILLWAY EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION IN AYAMARU LAKE, SORONG, WEST PAPUA
The Ministry of Public Works and Housing is constructing an embankment at Ayamaru Lake in the city of Sorong, West Papua, with the aim of raising the lake's water level by approximately 1.5 to 2 meters from the current water level. Needing a cost effective and environmentally friendly solution, Maccaferri Indonesia’s solution using Reno™ Mattress Plus as the embankment cover was chosen. This is due to Reno™ Mattress Plus being a flexible, non-rigid, and permeable material. Reno™ Mattress Plus has proven to be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly because the minimal use of rocks reduces the number of transporting vehicles during the project.
Ayamaru Lake is located in the Ayamaru District, Maybrat Regency, Sorong City, West Papua. This lake plays a crucial role as a source of life due to its abundant water, meeting the district’s needs, serving as a transportation route between districts, and contributing to the tourism sector.
The Ministry of Public Works and Housing is revitalizing Ayamaru Lake with the construction of spillway 1B. Once spillways 1A and 1B are operational, the river’s flow will be diverted through a structure, causing the water level of Ayamaru Lake 1 to rise by 1.5 to 2 meters from the current water level. As a result, the land around the upper part of Ayamaru Lake 1 will be flooded, leading to issues such as submerged connecting roads between villages and social problems.
A protective embankment is needed between spillway 1A and 1B to address this. This embankment serves as a barrier and collector of water from the lake, Ayamaru River, and its tributaries, directed toward the dam structure, and then released through the spillway towards Ayamaru Lake 2. The protective embankment will safeguard the land downstream and protect residents’ properties. Additionally, this embankment has the potential to enhance the beauty of Ayamaru Lake, which is currently a natural tourist attraction.
In the initial plan, concrete was to be used as the embankment cover. However, the required cost is quite high and is unnatural, necessitating a more cost-effective and efficient alternative. Maccaferri Indonesia proposes the use of Reno™ Mattress Plus as a solution for covering the embankment in Ayamaru Lake.
Reno™ Mattress Plus is a flexible, non-rigid, and permeable material, allowing it to adapt well to the contours of the submerged base without compromising its structural function. With a thickness of 30 cm, Reno™ Mattress Plus is placed on nonwoven geotextile with a separation function, providing continuous protection to the Ayamaru Lake embankment.
One interesting aspect of using Reno™ Mattress Plus is its positive impact on the environment and the economy. Compared to traditional lining systems such as rip-rap or masonry walls, Reno™ Mattress Plus has proven to be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. The minimal use of rocks reduces the number of transporting vehicles during the project, reducing the environmental impact on the surroundings.
Furthermore, all products used are coated with Galvanization (Zn+Al) and Polimac to ensure high durability in usage. This makes Reno™ Mattress Plus not only an environmentally friendly solution but also a guarantee of long-term sustainability. With this innovation, Maccaferri contributes not only to the physical protection of the Ayamaru Lake embankment but also to environmental sustainability. Reno™ Mattress Plus is not just a reliable technical solution but also echoes a commitment to the beauty of nature and sustainability.
This innovation inspires the idea that protecting the environment is not only our shared responsibility but also an opportunity to create better solutions for our future. Ayamaru Lake is not just a beautiful natural destination but also a witness to positive change achievable through collaboration and innovation.
