Barugbug Weir Rehabilitation Project: Irrigation and Flood Control Solution in Karawang Regency
Bendung Barugbug is located in Karawang Regency, West Java, playing an important role in irrigating the rice fields in the surrounding areas, especially in the Jatisari and Patokbeusi Districts. This dam not only supports the agricultural sector, which is the main source of livelihood for the local community, but also functions as a flood control for the estuary area of the Cilamaya River, which is often affected by water overflow during the rainy season. To enhance the stability and resilience of the Barugbug Weir, BBWS Citarum collaborates with Maccaferri in implementing constructive solutions using the Drop Structure System and Revetment Protection
Bendung Barugbug is located in Karawang Regency, West Java, playing an important role in irrigating the rice fields in the surrounding areas, especially in the Jatisari and Patokbeusi Districts. This dam not only supports the agricultural sector, which is the main source of livelihood for the local community, but also functions as a flood control for the estuary area of the Cilamaya River, which is often affected by water overflow during the rainy season
The Strategic Role of Barugbug Dam
Bendung Barugbug integrates the flow from two rivers, namely the Ciherang River and the Cilamaya River. The merging of these flows aims to optimize irrigation water distribution and reduce the risk of flooding. However, along with the changes in land use in the Ciherang and Cilamaya Watersheds, the volume of water flowing into the dam often exceeds the planned capacity. This poses a serious challenge in water flow control and flood management
Efforts to Address BBWS Citarum
As a responsive step to this challenge, the Citarum River Basin Organization (BBWS) is constructing a spillway or supplementary structure. The spillway functions to secure the dam from the threat of water overflow that could potentially cause damage. This project is part of the infrastructure rehabilitation efforts in the Jatiluhur Irrigation System, the largest irrigation system in Indonesia, covering an area of approximately 240,000 hectares.
Constructive Solutions by Maccaferri
To enhance the stability and resilience of the Barugbug Dam, BBWS Citarum collaborates with Maccaferri in implementing constructive solutions using the Drop Structure System and Revetment Protection. This solution includes a 200-meter treatment to protect the riverbanks and riverbed from potential erosion caused by heavy water flow
515/5,000 Characters Translate Bronjong material is used as the main component in this system. The wire structure filled with stones is effective in resisting erosion and strengthening slopes by stabilizing the soil and preventing material movement. In addition to gabions, Reno Mattress Plus is also applied. This product is similar to gabions but thinner, specifically designed for basic protection of wider channels. Reno Mattress Plus functions to reduce erosion and strengthen the soil surface, making it more resistant to heavy water flow.
Advantages and Benefits
The combination of gabions and Reno Mattress Plus offers advantages in structural stability and project execution efficiency. Both materials are capable of withstanding high river flow pressure (shear stress), ensuring long-term protection for the Barugbug Dam and its surroundings. This solution not only maintains the smooth distribution of irrigation water but also enhances the safety of the river basin, reducing the risk of flood damage.
Positive Impact on the Karawang Region
The implementation of this security system has a significant impact on maintaining agricultural productivity in Karawang and its surrounding areas. With the presence of the Barugbug Dam equipped with a spillway and adequate structural protection, the community can feel safer from the threat of flooding. This project is a step forward in the effort to manage water resources sustainably, combining technical solutions with the social and economic interests of the region.
As a result, this rehabilitation project significantly contributes to strengthening environmental resilience and improving the welfare of local communities who depend on the agricultural sector for their livelihoods.
