Overcoming Slope Challenges: Innovative Solutions at Rotiklot Dam

The Rotiklot Dam in Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, was built in December 2015 and inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in May 2019. With a capacity of 3.3 million cubic meters, this dam provides drinking water, and irrigation and supports tourism. However, in 2023, landslides on the slopes near the dam threaten infrastructure and official residences. Maccaferri Indonesia presents an innovative solution combining the Terramesh®️ System and Soil Nailing, creating sturdy protection. This construction method not only maintains infrastructure safety but also supports environmental sustainability.

Rotiklot Dam, a megaproject that is changing the face of Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, has been the center of attention since construction began in December 2015. Inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on May 20, 2019, this dam has a capacity of 3.3 million cubic meters. Not only does it function as a source of drinking water and irrigation covering an area of 149 hectares, but this dam also supports the tourism sector.

A challenge arose in mid-2023 when a 30-meter-high slope near the Rotiklot Dam experienced a landslide. As a result, two official houses located only 10 meters from the slope were buried in the ground. In addition, dam facilities such as spillways, residential roads, and others are at serious risk. Fast and effective treatment is needed to prevent the next landslide from occurring.

In facing this challenge, Maccaferri Indonesia presents an innovative solution combining the Terramesh®️ System and Soil Nailing. This combination is not just a technical solution, but also a step forward in addressing environmental challenges sustainably.

The Terramesh®️ System with a 4-meter-long tail is connected to a 15-meter Soil Nailing, creating sturdy and effective protection. The Terramesh®️ System protects against slopes dominated by expansive soil, with Geotextile acting as a filter, and Soil Nailing tasked with ensuring optimal slope stability.

The connection process between the Soil Nailing and Terramesh®️ System is carried out by folding the Terramesh®️ tail and connecting it using a wire rope every 20 meters. The construction methods adopted on-site not only ensure the strength of the joints but also provide much-needed safety.

This innovative combination not only maintains slope safety and protects infrastructure but also ensures the smooth functioning of the Rotiklot Dam without compromising the beauty and sustainability of the surrounding environment. With this solution, we gain physical stability and contribute positively to the environment, marking a step forward in sustainable engineering.
