Infrastructure Innovation: 150kV PLN Substation Ampel New Boyolali with Maccaferri Terramesh Solution

The Extra High Voltage Substation (GITET) 500 kV Ampel New / Boyolali is a very important project aimed at strengthening the electrical system in Central Java through the broader distribution of electrical loads. These efforts are being made due to the growth of the industrial sector in the area, which requires a significant amount of electricity consumption. This project also represents the government's commitment to boosting economic growth, particularly in Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

However, this project faces several major challenges in its construction, which will greatly endanger the safety of the project workers as well as the surrounding residents.

Challenges at the Project Site include

  • Topography: Hilly location with landslide-prone soil.
  • Slope Stability: The need for a robust yet environmentally friendly soil retention structure.
  • Sustainability: Prioritizing solutions that support environmental preservation.

The project team knows that conventional solutions like concrete walls might not be enough. Besides being expensive, concrete walls can damage the beauty and balance of the surrounding environment, so innovative solutions are neededā€”something more than just a strong structure and technology that aligns with sustainability principles. For this reason, the contractor chose to use the innovative Terramesh solution from Maccaferri to address complex geotechnical challenges and is trusted as a reliable retaining wall designed for extra slope stability as a landslide controller.

Terramesh Solution from Maccaferri

  • What is Terramesh? Terramesh is a slope reinforcement and retaining wall system that combines the strength of steel with natural vegetation.
  • Advantages:
    • Sturdy: Resistant to soil pressure and climate change.
    • Aesthetic: Can be greened to blend with the environment.
    • Environmentally Friendly: Reducing the carbon footprint during construction

This system is applied to protect an area 200 meters long with a height of 5 to 20 meters.

Implementation Process

  • Construction Stages:
    1. Land preparation and site clearing.
    2. Installation of the Terramesh system.
    3. Planting vegetation on slope surfaces.
  • Result: A stable, aesthetic, and sustainable structure.

As of October 8, 2024, the GITET 500 KV Ampel New / Boyolali has successfully obtained the Operation Worthiness Certificate (SLO), making it operationally safe to provide a sustainable electricity supply, particularly in Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This project serves as a successful example of the application of modern technology in supporting sustainable development in Indonesia.

Positive Impact of the Project

  • Infrastructure Stability: The substation can operate without disruption due to landslides.
  • Environmental Benefits: The use of local vegetation helps maintain the surrounding ecosystem.
  • Cost Efficiency: A long-term economical solution.

For the project team, this success is more than just completing a task. This is proof that technology and sustainability can go hand in hand. The PLN substation in Ampel not only brings electricity but also hope that future infrastructure development can be in harmony with nature. With solutions like Terramesh, we are not only building for today but also for future generations.

With global experience, Maccaferri ensures the best quality for national infrastructure. We are very proud to be part of this major project to build energy sustainability in line with Maccaferri’s vision of “Nurturing The World Of Tomorrow” to sustainably improve the quality of life for the wider community.
