Erosion Control with Vegetation at Gondang Dam, Karanganyar, Central Java

The construction of the Gondang Dam resulted in the splitting of the slopes around the dam. The split slopes can experience erosion due to rain or surface runoff. Selection of the right solution is very important to prevent the potential for erosion.  

The total area that needs to be protected during this project is around 13000 m2 in total. Maccaferri Indonesia is the innovative solution needed to prevent erosion by using a MacMat® HS erosion control blanket.  

The Gondang Dam was inaugurated in 2019 with a protected area of 43.36 hectares. Located in Ngargoyoso District, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, this dam has a capacity of 9.15 million cubic meters to work to stem water from the Garuda River. With this capacity, the Gondang dam can be used by the community to irrigate an agricultural area of 4,066 hectares in Karanganyar Regency and Sragen Regency.  

The construction of the Gondang Dam caused the slope to split. The cut slope will be exposed to rain or runoff which causes the surface material to be lost by water flow causing surface erosion. Slopes need to be protected to prevent surface erosion. An innovative solution is used instead of traditional shotcrete or stone walls due to the drainage system and price.  

To reduce erosion of the cut slope surface, Erosion Control Systems were chosen because of their easy application, permeable material, and competitive price. The material used for this solution is MacMat® HS. This solution had been defined as Selimut Pengendali Erosi – Matras Perkuatan Tipe III in Spesifikasi Khusus Interim Skh-1.3.17 Pengendali Erosi Lereng by Directorate General of Highways Bina Marga, Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR). The material serves as an initial solution before the growth of vegetation. The material is combined with vegetation to provide long-term mitigation of surface erosion.
