Erosion Control by Maccaferri with Vegetation at Pidekso Dam, Wonogiri, Central Java
The access road in Pidekso Dam area is surrounded by exposed slopes. These exposed slopes are prone to soil erosion due to their vulnerability to rainfall and lack of vegetation on the slope surface. The area needs to be protected to prevent landslides.
The total area that needs to be protected is 8,174 m2. Maccaferri Indonesia presents an environmentally friendly solution at a more affordable price compared to others for the prevention of soil erosion by using a MacMat® HS erosion control blanket.
Pidekso Dam is located in the Upper Bengawan Solo River, Giriwoyo Wonogiri sub-district. Built in 2014, the dam can accommodate 25 million cubic meters of water with a maximum inundation area of 232 hectares, a length of 387 m, and a height of 40 m. With this capacity and inundation area, the Pidekso dam is predicted to be able to irrigate 1,500 hectares of an irrigation area in the Wonogiri Regency.

The selection of the right solution was necessary to prevent surface erosion and failure due to water. Maccaferri introduced an innovative solution that is environmentally friendly using MacMat® HS which consists of an HDPE geomat and a double-twisted wire mesh panel. Considering MacMat® HS’ ability to drain water and allow the growth of vegetation while costing less compared to the use of shotcrete or stone wall, MacMat® HS was chosen as the slope protection in Pidekso Dam project.
MacMat® HS has been installed on the slope to allow the geomat part controls surface erosion and helps to propagate the vegetation, while the wire mesh provides the required tensile and punching strength to the system. Upon heavy rains and surface water flows, along with the vegetation, the polymeric geomat shall prevent erosion. Once vegetated, geomat reduces runoff velocities and increases infiltration. Steel pins are used to secure the MacMat® HS to the slope surface. The vegetation shall be applied using the manual mulching method using LCC (Legume Cover Crop) seed.
Available in rolls, MacMat® HS has an easy installation procedure with the support of a T-shape deformed bar to hold the mesh onto the cut slope. Maccaferri Erosion Control System shall grant some advantages such as:
