Environmentally Friendly Erosion Control with Vegetation at Balang Island Bridge, East Kalimantan

The construction of Pulau Balang Bridge in East Kalimantan left the abutment slopes open. It required protection to protect the slopes from erosion that further endanger the safety of the abutments. The total area that needs to be protected during this project is 1920 m2.

To reduce erosion of the cut slope surface, the Erosion Control System from Maccaferri was chosen due to its easy application, permeable material, and competitive price. The material used is Macmat® which functions as a starting material for slope cutting and is combined with vegetation as a long-term surface erosion mitigation.

Pulau Balang Bridge is a cable bridge built to connect Balikpapan to Penajem Paser Utara, East Kalimantan. The bridge functions as the main logistics route as well as access to the Archipelago’s National Capital (IKN). This bridge spans 804 meters long, with a width of 22.4 m which has 4 lanes and includes a pedestrian path.

The construction of Pulau Balang Bridge makes the abutment slopes open and requires protection to protect the slopes from erosion that further endanger the safety of the abutments. The total area that needs to be protected during this project is 1920 m2. Open slopes will be vulnerable to rain or runoff, as surface material is dispersed by water runoff which can cause surface erosion.

To reduce erosion of the cut slope surface, the Erosion Control System from Maccaferri was chosen due to its easy application, permeable material, and competitive price. This solution has been designated as a Type II Erosion Control Blanket in the Interim Special Specification Skh-1.3.17 Slope Erosion Control by the Directorate General of Highways, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR). The material used is Macmat® which functions as a starting material for slope cutting and is combined with vegetation as a long-term surface erosion mitigation.
