Anglesea Landfill Cell 3C Sideliner Extension

Challenge

Anglesea Landfill, operational since 1974, faced increasing pressure to expand Cell 3 to accommodate ongoing waste disposal. The project required constructing a new liner for Stage D and extending the bund wall of Stage C by up to 5 meters over a length of 105 meters. The challenge was multifaceted: the retaining structure had to support steep slopes in a landfill environment with variable waste types, including putrescible and inert materials, and withstand chemical exposure and temperature fluctuations over the long term. Traditional mass gravity gabion walls would have been slow to construct, labor-intensive, and required large amounts of rock fill, increasing cost and environmental impact. In addition, there was a need for a solution that could be integrated into the surrounding landscape, allowing for potential vegetation and erosion control, without compromising structural stability. The contractor also sought a system that was straightforward to install on site, minimizing construction risks and downtime.

Solution

The project used the Maccaferri Green Terramesh® system, a versatile, modular solution for mechanically stabilized earth slopes and embankments. The prefabricated units, made from heavily galvanized GalMac® and polymer-coated steel wire, were quick and straightforward to install on site, eliminating the need for external formwork and reducing labor and material costs compared to traditional gabion walls. Each layer was reinforced with Paralink 200 geogrids, providing the necessary strength to withstand soil stresses, chemical exposure, and temperature variations, while allowing geogrid termination at the slope face to minimize risk of UV, fire, or vandalism damage. The steep 70-degree bund wall was supported by integral steel braces, with structural backfill and a loose rock veneer providing additional stability. The front face of the system could be filled with soil and planted, creating a sustainable, vegetated slope that reduced erosion and enhanced environmental integration. With a comprehensive installation manual, the contractor was able to implement the system efficiently, achieving the required height extension and new liner construction safely, quickly, and cost-effectively.
