Ensuring Safety Near the Cliffside

The Parnell Baths, located at the end of Judges Bay Road on Point Resolution, have been affected by erosion, tree falls, and rock falls from a cliff ranging from 3m to 20m in height. Temporary measures like a concrete jersey barrier and fence were initially installed. Recognizing the need for a permanent solution to ensure public safety.

Identifying four cliff areas with varying geological features. Slope stability and rockfall trajectory analyses were conducted. The Maccaferri Dynamic Rockfall Barrier RB100UAF, certified by the European Assessment Document (EAD), was selected for its 111kJ energy level. The installation, managed by Earth Stability Limited, included 139m of rockfall barriers divided into four sections. The process took three weeks, allowing Auckland Council to reopen the pool on time.
