Oil and gas installations are critical infrastructures of high importance and value. If a pipeline is damaged, significant revenues will be lost, harm may be caused to the environment, and the leakage could be a potential danger to the local population.
Some of Maccaferri’s systems are used precisely during the construction of international pipelines as preventative measures. Given its long-time expertise in oil and gas industry projects, Maccaferri offers a broad range of pipeline protection solutions. Maccaferri’s engineering solutions are suitable for on-land and marine purposes. Most prominently, they lend themselves to the protection, stabilization and anchoring (for undersea pipelines and cables) of a variety of geotechnical works, thus providing a world of engineering opportunities.
Both Oil and gas installations are often subject to erosion of soil. Especially close to embankments, rivers and channels erosion, of land, becomes critical and can lead to extensive damage to infrastructure. Unfortunately, relying on vegetation growth alone to secure river beds and slopes is unreliable as it is hard to achieve full vegetation coverage of the areas in question. In light of this, Maccaferri provides (among many other solutions) Gabion Boxes and Reno Mattresses to combat erosion. For Example, Maccaferri Mexico installed 10,344m3 of Gabion during the construction of pipelines in Veracruz (Rio Yehualasco), Mexico. In the Rio Actopan project (Veracruz, Mexico) Maccaferri also installed 27.301 m3 of Gabion ZN. Maccaferri gabion baskets are made from high-quality steel wire, which is heavily galvanised to provide long-term corrosion protection. An additional protective polymeric coating is also applied for gabions that are to be used in more aggressive environments, or where a longer design life is required.
In addition to Gabion Walls, Maccaferri also uses its MacMat R solution—a permanent, three-dimensional, geomat that provides reinforcement stops erosion and promotes revegetation—to reduce damages caused by erosion. The engineered characteristics of MacMat R enable designers to sustainably and safely secure the perimeters of construction areas and final works.
