Protecting Lives After Tragedy: Maccaferri’s Debris Flow Protection in Metiaut, Timor Leste

Maccaferri Indonesia provides a sustainable Debris Flow solution in Metiaut, Dili – Timor Leste, using debris flow barriers, FlexMac DT, and PoliMac gabions to safeguard communities from future landslides, while integrating HelloMac early warning technology for real-time alerts.

A coastal neighborhood in Metiaut, was struck by tragedy when a devastating debris flow swept through the area, claiming lives and damaging critical infrastructure, including homes and a school located near the slope’s base. The debris also blocked Av. de Metiaut, one of the main roads connecting parts of Dili.

The disaster, triggered by heavy rainfall in an area with inherently unstable geological conditions, served as a harsh reminder of the threats faced by communities living near steep hillsides in tropical regions. As rescue efforts unfolded, it became clear that longer-term solutions were urgently needed to prevent future tragedies of this kind.

A Sustainable Slope Protection Solution

In response, Maccaferri Indonesia stepped in with an integrated solution to address the risks of future debris in Metiaut. Maccaferri implemented a comprehensive Debris Flow System, combining several of its advanced technologies:

Debris Flow Barriers – Engineered steel barriers installed across vulnerable slopes to intercept and stop fast-moving debris before it reaches residential zones.
FlexMac® DT – A robust modular structure designed to absorb and control the energy of debris flow, enhancing slope stability.
PoliMac® Gabions – Highly durable double twisted wire mesh coated with PoliMac® and filled with stones, offering both slope reinforcement and erosion control. PoliMac® is not only suitable for use in the most aggressive environments, it is also free of heavy metals and does not release pollutants, thus becoming one with the environment and its fauna.

Together, these systems form a resilient protective shield against debris flows, dramatically reducing the risk to both people and property.

Smart Technology for Safer Communities

To enhance early warning capabilities, Maccaferri is also installing HelloMac, a real-time sensor-based alert system that will allow authorities and residents to detect early signs of debris movement. This innovative approach combines physical protection with digital intelligence, giving the community more time to respond and evacuate if necessary.

Building Resilience for the Future

“Protecting lives and ensuring the safety of infrastructure in debris-prone areas like Metiaut requires not only immediate response but also future-focused prevention,” said Alfian Mauladi – Maccaferri Engineer. “Our solution brings together advanced engineering and technology to help communities live safely and sustainably alongside nature.”

The Metiaut project is part of a growing recognition that disaster mitigation must evolve beyond short-term fixes, emphasizing resilience, risk management, and environmental harmony. Projects like this offer hope that with the right planning and technology, future disasters can be averted and lives can be saved.

This initiative reflects Maccaferri’s commitment to climate adaptation engineering, providing innovative solutions that help communities withstand and adapt to the increasing risks posed by a changing climate.
