CAPRICORN PARK LAKE REVETMENT

Problem

Capricorn Park is an industrial/housing complex at Marina da Gama near Muizenberg. The entire area is comprised of marine transported fine to medium sand and is therefore highly erodible. A feature of the development is a man-made lake in the centre of the complex. A revetment structure was therefore required for surface erosion protection and bank stabilisation.

Solution

PVC coated galvanised wire gabions were used to form the toe protection for the revetment. As the ground water level on site is above the top level of the gabion, it was necessary to pre-fill the gabions and place them by crane. To facilitate the lifting and placing of the gabions under the water, an effective means of lifting the gabions with retrievable slings was devised. Two 100mm diameter PVC pipes were placed in the 2 x 1 x 1 gabions, one in the bottom of each compartment spanning the 1m width prior to the stone filling in the normal manner. The total length of the revetment is approximately 2000 linear meters.
