New Kota Kinabalu Jetty Construction: Innovative Solutions in Progress
Transforming Kota Kinabalu Port into a Seaside Landmark
The development of Jesselton Quay at Kota Kinabalu Port is bringing a new era to the area. Jesselton Quay is set to become a new landmark, offering places to dine, shop, and enjoy entertainment by the sea. Historically, Kota Kinabalu Port was one of Sabah’s main ports, handling various types of cargo. Now, with Sapangar Port taking over as the main port, Kota Kinabalu Port handles only non-containerized cargo like general cargo and dry bulk.
To tackle construction challenges at the port, especially in the salty environment, revetment solutions like rock armor and gabion are being used. Choosing the right coatings is crucial for durability in these tough conditions. According to BS 10223-3:2013 standards, the site is classified as C5, indicating very high aggressiveness.
The project uses Galfan coating and a high-abrasive polymer coating called Polimac to ensure a design life of 120 years. Research shows that Galfan coating, made of 95% zinc and 5% aluminum, lasts three to four times longer than regular zinc coating. Polimac provides ten times more abrasion resistance than PVC coating, which is important to prevent wear and tear from wave action and moving stones within the gabion.
