GABION GROYNES RIVER PROTECTION – RIVER OSUM
Problem
The Osumi River, flowing through Albania’s Berat region, faces significant erosion problems that threaten both the environment and local communities. Heavy rainfall, deforestation, and poor land management have destabilized the riverbanks, leading to soil loss and increased erosion, especially during the rainy season. This affects agriculture, as fertile land is lost, and also threatens infrastructure, including bridges and roads.
Efforts to control erosion, such as planting vegetation, building barriers, and improving agricultural practices, are underway, but the issue remains a challenge for the region’s long-term sustainability.
Solution
A sustainable and cost-effective solution to mitigate these issues is the use of gabion groynes, which help stabilize the riverbanks, reduce erosion, and enhance sediment deposition.
This Solution
• Prevent erosion along the riverbanks.
• Enhance sediment deposition to maintain navigability and ecosystem balance.
• Reduce flooding risks by guiding the river flow.
• Strengthen riverbanks using an environmentally friendly approach
The Solution consisted of a 400m river protection, and 5 Groynes with heights 6m.
in total 8370m3 of Gabions were installed in 3 months.
Implementing gabion groynes along the River Osum in Berat provides a cost-effective, sustainable, and eco-friendly solution for erosion control and flood management. This approach will contribute to long-term riverbank stability, preserving both the urban landscape and natural ecosystem.
