Vung Ang – Bung, Vietnam Project: Engineering Through Challenges

Turning Challenging Landscapes Into Safe, Lasting Infrastructure

The Challenge

Several cut slopes along the Vung Ang–Bung Expressway have shown signs of surface instability due to weathering, variable rock conditions, and intense seasonal rainfall. The heterogeneous and fractured nature of the excavated materials has reduced slope strength, increasing susceptibility to shallow failures.

During heavy rainfall, surface erosion, raveling of loose rock fragments, and localized detachment of weathered material were observed. These conditions not only threaten long-term slope stability but also pose safety risks to road users from potential rockfall and debris on the carriageway.

With growing regional traffic and the need to ensure uninterrupted expressway operations, a durable and reliable surface-stabilization solution was required.

The Solutions

Maccaferri’s MacMat® HS was selected as the primary surface-strengthening system. MacMat® HS is a high-performance erosion-control and slope-reinforcement geomat that combines a three-dimensional polymer matrix with high-strength steel mesh, delivering both surface protection and mechanical reinforcement.

Installed directly onto the slope face, the system effectively confines loose and weathered material, preventing raveling and small rock detachment. Its high tensile capacity allows it to bridge minor discontinuities and restrain unstable surface layers, significantly reducing the risk of shallow failures.

The geomat’s three-dimensional structure also promotes vegetation growth, enhancing long-term erosion resistance and slope stability.ectivity. The completed works reinforce the surrounding landscape, enhance road safety, and support reliable operation for decades ahead.
