Securing Steep Terrain at Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant

Rockfall protection system safeguards critical infrastructure from falling debris in Selangor’s hilly terrain

Location: Loji Rawatan Air Langat 2, Langat, Selangor, Malaysia

The Challenge
The Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant project faced significant geotechnical challenges, particularly with unstable granitic rock slopes. Weathering, natural erosion, and fractured rock masses caused detached rocks—some falling from heights of 12 to 15 metres—posing a serious hazard to the site’s infrastructure and ongoing development.

The Solution
To address these risks, a robust slope stabilization system was implemented. The solution included the installation of rock bolts and Steelgrid High Resistance (SGHR 30) mesh, designed using MacRO, Maccaferri’s proprietary rockfall protection software. A secure drapery system was deployed, where the high-strength steel mesh was anchored to the slope to contain and stabilize the loose rock masses, significantly reducing the risk of rockfall and enhancing site safety.
