Rockfall Barrier Enhances Safety Along Road in Kenyir
New barrier system in Terengganu intercepts falling boulders and enhances road safety near Kenyir
Location: JKR Road – Kenyir Rockfall Barrier, Terengganu, Malaysia
The Challenge
A past rockfall event along the cut slope adjacent to JKR Road blocked one lane and posed serious risks to motorists. Triggered by heavy rainfall, erosion, and weak rock mass conditions, the incident caused dislodged boulders, visible tension cracks, and scour marks on the exposed rock face.
The slope comprises highly weathered granite and metasedimentary rocks, which resulted in loose boulders sliding down toward the roadway—threatening the safety of road users.
The Solution
To mitigate further incidents, a 4-metre-high, 180-metre-long Rockfall Barrier was installed along the JKR road reserve. Designed to intercept falling debris, the system features a 2000 kJ flexible energy-absorbing barrier placed at the optimal interception zone as proposed by the project consultant.
The system includes high-tensile steel posts spaced at 8.0 metres centre-to-centre, anchored into concrete foundations to ensure long-term stability and effective performance in intercepting rockfall events.
