Kinabatangan–Sabah Road Gets Makeover

Innovative Design Cuts Asphalt Use by 40%, Enhancing Efficiency and Sustainability

Kinabatangan, Sabah, Malaysia

Resurfacing works are underway on the main Kinabatangan road leading to Sandakan, Sabah, as authorities address accelerated pavement deterioration caused by growing traffic volumes, harsh environmental conditions, and aging road materials.

Engineers have reported serious structural issues such as cracking, rutting, and surface deformation—signs that the road is approaching critical failure. Left unchecked, these issues would pose increased safety risks, inflate maintenance costs, and ultimately demand complete road reconstruction.

To counter this, a cutting-edge pavement design software has been deployed. By factoring in key variables like design traffic, axle load distribution, speed, and traffic growth, the new design has successfully reduced asphalt pavement thickness by 40% while maintaining performance standards. This efficiency comes with a trade-off—a 30% reduction in the road’s projected lifespan—but it significantly improves sustainability and cost-effectiveness in the short to medium term.

This initiative marks a forward-thinking approach to road maintenance, balancing durability with smart resource use to better serve Sabah’s growing transportation needs.
