Rockfall Protection System in Naringgul | Case Study

The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, through PJN 2 PPK 2.5 West Java, undertook a vital national road construction project connecting Bandung and South Cianjur. This infrastructure aims to establish better traffic flow and boost the regional economy in the southern part of West Java. However, the challenging terrain presented a significant safety hurdle.

The Challenge

During the project, a severe rockfall hazard was identified along the Bts. Bandung/Cianjur – Naringgul Cidaun Road. The heavily weathered conditions of the surrounding rock slopes posed a direct threat to the lives of road users.

The project required a robust solution capable of mitigating this hazard. Engineers calculated that the chosen protection system needed to withstand massive impacts, specifically an estimated rockfall mass of 10 tons falling from a height of 30 meters, with a volume of 4 square meters.

The Maccaferri Solution

To meet these extreme safety requirements and safely dissipate the immense forces of falling rocks, Maccaferri Indonesia deployed its Dynamic Barriers. Specifically, the RB 3000 rockfall barrier was selected and installed at the site.

Maccaferri provided comprehensive end-to-end support throughout the project, starting from technical recommendations to manufacturing, material supply, and on-site product assistance during the construction phase.

Key Features of the Installed System:

  • Specialized Braking: A special brake system is integrated into the barrier to absorb most of the energy from the rockfall.
  • High Energy Capacity: The RB 3000 barrier is engineered to dissipate the kinetic energy of falling rocks up to 3,000 kJ.
  • Scale and Coverage: The installed system stands 6 meters high and spans a total length of 25 meters, utilizing 150 square meters of material.
  • Dual-Mesh Interception: The bulk of the system’s strength is provided by strong ring nets, which are combined with double-twisted steel wires featuring smaller openings to effectively catch smaller rocks and debris.
  • Advanced Corrosion Protection: To ensure a long design life, both the ring nets and the steel wires are coated with Galfan (ZnAl5% – Class A).
  • Heavy-Duty Anchoring: To withstand large energy impacts, the barrier is firmly held in place with an array of steel posts, T-FAST (Rope Anchors), and concrete foundations.
