A discussion of two case histories in Badens and Fabrezan on projects using Reno mattress
Named after one of the first interventions carried out by Maccaferri over 100 years ago, the Reno Mattress is now synonymous with hydraulic works and erosion protection projects worldwide.
In 2015 France Maccaferri realized two analogous projects that both used Reno Mattress and DT gabions, in order to protect two villages in the south of France. These villages were endangered by devastating floods in 1999, caused by the overflow of watercourses “Fontintruse” and “Canet”.
The local water development intercommunal associations have decided to launch various thoughts and actions to protect inhabited areas from flooding. The solution to the challenge was to create a flood regulation basin system upstream from the villages that enabled the mitigation of centennial flooding and reduces the flood risk in this area. The storage capacity of these two basins is of 295 000m3 (Fabrezan) and 130 000 m3 (Badens).
As a part of this project an overflow dam in Reno mattress and double twist gabion was constructed by Maccaferri France’s teams as per the implementation standard NFP94 325-2.
Maccaferri France’s engineering team provided the two projects of similar nature with both a design solution and technical notes. To optimize the design and quantities, several mattresses and gabions heights were chosen: 0.23, 0.30 and 0.50cm. The double twist mesh of the product has a polymer coating, that enables the solution to offer a design life of up 120 years in an hydraulic environment and a NF ACIER certification.
The main advantage of Reno Mattress are their double diaphragms: they make the structure more resistant to hydraulic solicitation and enables faster implementation during the filling procedure.
