Our SteelGrid® HR and MacMat® chosen to stabilize a slope and ensure rockfall protection for people underneath
Several rain events triggered landslides on a slope near Zierbena Port, Vizcaya (Basque Country). Our composite mesh SteelGrid HR together with our geomat Macmat were chosen to reinforce and stabilize the slope and to protect pedestrians as well as a car parking zone from any future rockfalls.
Zierbena is a municipality on the North West coast of Vizcaya, 19 kilometres from Bilbao (Basque Country). Several recent rain events caused landslides and rock falls on a slope near the Port.
This slope is predominantly made up of rock, sometimes degraded on its surface so it creates small blocks that are likely to fall. There is also an area of soft soil that is saturated in water and whose stabilization has to be treated differently.
The Steelgrid® HR is a composite of double twisted steel wire hexagonal mesh with high tensile strength steel cables, woven into the mesh during the manufacturing process. This geocomposite provides a high resistance at a very low deformation. The high level corrosion protection for the steel wire mesh ( Class A GalMac® Zn/Al coating and polymer coating) makes the SteelGrid® system ideal for use in regions near coastal environments. This material has the CE certification.
MacMat®is a geomat of thick polyamide filaments designed to be secured to vulnerable slope faces to prevent surface erosion from running off. It is used for long-term erosion protection and immediately increases the soil’s resistance to erosion by enhancing the growth of vegetation through the mat. This material also has the CE certification.
Installation works were carried out from January to March 2018 by MIRAMAR GUNITADOS.
A total of 100 m2 of MacMat® 18.1 and 720 m2 of SteelGrid® HR were supplied. These were later reinforced with cables and bolts.
