ROCKFALL PROTECTION – ARBËR ROAD
Problem
Arbër Road (Rruga e Arbrit) is a key infrastructure project in Albania connecting Tirana to Peshkopi, spanning 75 kilometers through mountainous terrain. Construction began in the early 2010s, with delays affecting progress. Once completed, the road will significantly reduce travel time, enhancing economic development, tourism, and regional connectivity. It is a vital project for improving access to the northern regions and strengthening Albania’s infrastructure.
During the construction of Arbër Road, rockfall has been one of the significant challenges, especially given the road’s path through mountainous terrain. The risk of rockslides and falling debris has posed safety concerns for workers and delayed progress. To address this, extensive measures, such as rock stabilization techniques, netting, and Rockfall Barriers, have been implemented to secure the slopes and reduce the risk of rockfall along the route. Despite these efforts, the difficult geology has continued to impact the project’s timeline.
Solution
A total of 4400m2 of Rockfall Barrier Zn class B 1000KJ with a height of H=4.0m have been installed on this area to protect the main road from rock fall.
