We sponsored the competition organized by the PET Civil UFRGS
A wooden box and five screens, 25 kg of fine sand, a newspaper, a metal shell to handle the sand and a pair of scissors: these were the materials received by each of the eight student teams participating in the Maccaferri ‘Desafio de Taludes’ 2017. The competition aims to spread knowledge on the use of geosynthetics among Civil Engineering students, who were asked to construct a reduced scale model of a reinforced soil structure.
Open to students of the PET Civil of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (URFGS) and other universities, the ‘Desafio de Taludes’ aimed to stimulate participants’ creativity and learning on geosynthetics.
Each of the eight teams was asked to create a reduced scale model of a reinforced soil structure, using sand and strips of paper as main components. The models were judged based on three parameters: load supported by the structure, time of execution and material saving. The breaking of the slopes was carried out on November 24th, in the presence of all enrolled students.
The three winning teams were:
- 1st place: “Taipa de Açude” team. Each team member received a Maccaferri backpack, the books Brazilian Manual of Geosynthetics and History of Geotechnical Engineering in Brazil, and a Maccaferri technical kit.
- 2nd place: “Os Taludeiros da PUC” team. Each team member received a Maccaferri backpack, the book History of Geotechnical Engineering in Brazil and a Maccaferri technical kit.
- 3rd place: “Os Taludeiros da UFRGS” team. Each team member received a Maccaferri technical kit.
Sponsored by Maccaferri, the competition was brought to UFRGS after the participation of the PET team in the 2nd CONPET Civil (National Congress of the PETs Civil Groups), which took place in Maringá in 2015.
