More reliable, easy to construct, cost-effective and environmentally friendly than concrete, this solution better suits the requirements of the mining sector
CSN Mining needed a solution to expand the primary crusher of their Casa de Pedra mine in Congonhas, in the State of Minas Gerais. A 13 m high and 102 m long retaining wall was needed, which had to support a 250 ton mounting crane. Our Terramesh System reinforced with MacGrid WG 200 geogrids was chosen instead of the traditional concrete wall, for its reliability, ease of construction and cost-effectiveness.
CSN Mining, the second largest exporter of iron ore in Brazil, needed to expand the “Drive Unit”, i.e. the primary crusher of their Casa de Pedra mine in Congonhas, State of Minas Gerais. CSN Mining contracted Grupo MPE and Araguaia Engenharia to develop a 13 m high and 102 m long retaining wall solution, which had to support a 250 ton mounting crane.
The initial design proposed a concrete retaining structure but the engineering companies were looking for more technically reliable and cost-effective solutions to address the geotechnical challenges of this project. Moreover, they also needed a fast-to-install solution to reduce delay to the works program.
Grupo MPE and Araguaia Engenharia turned to Maccaferri as a leader in the mining sector for such solutions. Traditional concrete structures are commonly used in mine fields but they are rigid and can be prone to cracking. We proposed a Terramesh System structure in combination with our primary geogrid MacGrid WG 200.
Soil reinforcement using geogrids often enables the reuse of on-site materials as structural backfill to the reinforced soil structures. This is an added attraction within mine works where there is usually available and suitable backfill material. This further reduces the cost of the project and also offers improved sustainability. The solution had the added benefit of being fast-to-install.
Thanks to its fast and easy execution, combined with the possibility to use local soil as structural backfill and reduce the project cost compared to the initial concrete solution, our Terramesh System proposal successfully won the turnkey contract.
