Geomat MacMat is installed to prevent channel erosion

MacMat erosion application features in an article on Foundations & Geotechnical Works

“The Arroyo Step Jose” canal in Porto Alegre, and the Carlton Canal, both part of the Rio Grande do Sul (RS), have been subject to refurbishment designed to protect them from erosion by the tension of drag flow of water and local weather. The authors of the Foundations & Geotechnical Works magazine, Jose Roberto Campos Costa Junior, Alan Donassollo and Paulo Eduardo de Oliveira da Rocha, published an article in the N.63 edition, in which they discussed the challenges involved in the construction process works. The article posts that Maccaferri’s MacMat erosion mats were used in both projects due to changes in the types of coatings.  MacMat R is formed by a flexible three-dimensional geomat with a void space higher than 90%. It uses thick polypropylene  mono-filaments fused at the contact points, reinforced by a metallic  hexagonal double twist mesh.

The main challenges in Arroyo Step Jose involved the geotechnical and hydraulic stabilization of the canals banks. To overcome this difficulty, Maccaferri installed its MacMat R geomat onto the upper 2/3 of the channel banks. The lower 1/3 of the bank and slope base were protected with Maccaferri’s Reno Mattresses with mortared face. Both solutions protect the channels against sheaar forces an also are easy to maintain. The three-dimensional matric of UV stabilized, non-degradable synthetic fibres that constitute the MacMat geomats are permeable in nature. Its permeability provides an environment that enhances the growth of vegetation through the mat, thus allowing for a successful integration with the environment. In total, 7150 m² of 16 mm polypropylene three-dimensional geomats were installed in 23 working days, hence marking an excellent productivity of 310 m² / day for a team of five professionals.

The challenge in the Carlton project presented itself in choosing an appropriate coating suitable for trapezoidal channels. The erosion protection solution would strengthen the final storm water runoff channel from the industrial courtyard of the IESA module factory. The designer of the project chose Maccaferri’s MacMat geomat solution given its cost savings to productivity (very rapid to install for the level of protection provided), permeability, and flexibility. The product was applied as a surface protection of the wetted perimeter of the channel and received a gravel layer was placed onto it, to increase the resistance to movement. The works were carried out manually by construction workers under the supervision of the designer.
