Civil, Environmental and Materials Engineering professors were introduced to geosynthetics
Many undergraduate engineering programs completely lack geosynthetic instruction; often lecturers and professors may not have the knowledge, confidence or materials to effectively teach geosynthetics. To address this issue, the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) promoted the second edition of Educate the Educators Brazil (EtE Brazil), a geosynthetics training program for university professors which took place in Recife, State of Pernambuco, on September 29th and 30th, 2017.
The two-day course brought together 27 university professors from the North and Northeast regions of the country and took place at the Polytechnic School of the University of Pernambuco (POLI / UPE). The program included nine lectures, five case history presentations, three discussion sessions on strategies to introduce the subject in undergraduate engineering courses, and a practical workshop.
The lectures were taught by professors Maria das Graças Gardoni, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Delma de Mattos Vidal, from the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), and Ennio Marques Palmeiras from the University of Brasília (UnB). Participants received training and educational material on the fundamentals of geosynthetics, such as types, functions, main applications, properties, tests, behaviour over time, specifications, as well as aspects related to installation and sizing.
Maccaferri was one of the main sponsors of the event. For the supporters of EtE Brazil 2017, the event represented an opportunity to create a network to promote and facilitate the inclusion of geosynthetics in university programs.
