The Brazilian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society, of which Maccaferri is a member, promoted a course on Geosynthetics in Engineering Works addressed to professionals and students. The course was hosted by the Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Campinas.
The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) is a learned society dedicated to the scientific and engineering development of geotextiles, geomembranes, related products and associated technologies. It brings together corporate, individual and student members worldwide who are involved in the design, manufacture, sales, use or testing of geosynthetics and associated technologies. Maccaferri is a member of the IGS Brazilian Chapter and supports their projects, including the organization of courses.
On April 26th, 2017, IGS Brazil promoted an introductory course on Geosynthetics in Engineering Works at the Mackenzie Presbyterian University, Campinas, State of Sao Paulo.
With an intense eight hour programme from 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm, the course covered the following topics:
- types and functions of geosynthetics;
- tests and properties of geosynthetics;
- long-term behaviour and specifications;
- geosynthetics in environmental protection works;
- drainage systems, surface erosion control, channels and reservoirs, waste disposal;
- geosynthetics in road works;
- reinforced soil structures;
- landfills in areas with low bearing capacity;
- construction and restoration of pavements.
The course was entirely conducted by Prof. Delma Vidal, a well-known engineering educator and a long-time leader within IGS Brazil. She has a PhD from the Joseph Fourier University in France and is a professor of Geotechnical Engineering (Geotechnics) at the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA), where she has been researching and teaching geosynthetics since 1986.
