The new Board of Directors will lead the Regional Chapter for the two-year period 2017-18
Our Market Development Manager, Monique Sobral, has taken up the Vice-Presidency of the ABMS’ Board, Rio de Janeiro Chapter, for the two-year period 2017-18. The first entirely women-led board has set itself the aim of approaching students and young engineers to engage them in the Association and help them meet experienced professionals and corporations.
The Brazilian Association of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ABMS) includes eight regional chapters located in Rio Grande do Sul, Parana-Santa Catarina, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Bahia, North-Eastern and Central-Western regions. Maccaferri has joined the Board of Directors of the Rio de Janeiro Chapter for the period 2017-18. Our Market Development Manager, Monique Sobral, has taken up the Vice-Presidency of the Chapter, whose board is entirely composed by women for the first time.
The new board has already set its focus: fostering initiatives to bring students and young engineers to ABMS. Efforts will include a programme of monthly lectures, the organization of events at universities and technical visits. “We want young people to realize the importance of taking part in such an active technical entity as ABMS. Within the association, they would be side by side with established professionals and with some of the main companies in the industry,” stated the new president, Ana Cristina Sieira.
The Association wants to reach the whole community of professionals, added Ana Cristina. The idea is to gather the public of Rio to discuss geotechnical matters. In March 2017, the first event organized under the new board was the lecture “Slopes and Embankments: Stability Issues and Containment”, given by Luis Edmundo Campos, civil engineer and President of ABMS, Bahia Chapter, Professor at the Polytechnic School of the Federal University of Bahia. In May, the engineer Pedro Franca gave a lecture on Rio de Janeiro’s Metro Line 4.
