New Aswan City
Challenge
The New Aswan City development is a large-scale urban expansion covering more than 1,050 acres on the west bank of the Nile, characterized by steep terrain, variable soil conditions, and erosion-prone slopes. As part of the infrastructure works, retaining structures were required to support road corridors and development platforms while ensuring long-term stability and safety in a challenging desert environment. The main challenge was to construct durable retaining walls capable of accommodating earth pressures and differential settlement, while integrating seamlessly into the landscape and meeting the construction requirements of a rapidly developing urban area.
Solution
Maccaferri provided a tailored MacWall® MSE wall system, with a total facing area of approximately 4,500 m², reinforced using MacGrid® WG geogrids. The system offered a flexible and efficient solution, well-suited to the project’s ground conditions and geometric constraints. The combination of modular concrete facing blocks and high-performance geogrid reinforcement ensured effective load distribution, controlled deformation, and long-term durability. The MacWall system enabled efficient construction while delivering a stable, cost-effective, and aesthetically consistent retaining solution, supporting the infrastructure development of New Aswan City.
