NAJD AL MAQSAR HERITAGE VILLAGE OF KHORFAKKAN

Problem

Najd Al Maqsar is a historic area with a rich heritage spanning thousands of years. Located in a Wadi, it features a fort built 300 years ago on a mountain summit. A tribe once lived here, drawn by the wadi’s water, which supported an al falaj irrigation system. The village includes 13 houses, nearly a century old, used as refuge from floods. Archaeological discoveries in the area include rocks engraved with images of camels and horses dating back to 2,000 BC. After significant restoration, the site has been transformed into a tourist destination, featuring 7 restored units in a 100-year-old house with breathtaking mountain views. Covering 17,210 m², it offers visitors a glimpse into the past while providing modern facilities like a restaurant, reception area, and a trail leading to the historic fort. As part of these efforts, retaining structures were required to stabilize some of the slopes.

Solution

Maccaferri’s Terramesh MSE Wall system was ultimately selected for its economic benefits, environmental advantages, and natural stone finish, which complemented the surrounding landscape. The gabion face of the Terramesh units was filled with local gabbro stones, meeting the architectural criteria for a natural look. Space constraints at the base of the wall required the soil reinforcement tails of the system to be bent upwards, ensuring the necessary pullout stability. After completion, the new retaining walls blended seamlessly into the overall landscape of the historical village, preserving its aesthetic and cultural integrity. Maccaferri Middle East was subcontracted to provide design, supply, and construction assistance for the project’s Paramesh MSE wall, offering their expertise in ensuring the stability and functionality of the system. The result was a successful integration of modern engineering with the historical significance of the site.
