Challenge
Dubai Hills Estate stands as a premier development in Dubai, a key part of the ambitious Mohammed Bin Rashid City project, brought to life through a collaboration between real estate powerhouses Emaar Properties and Meraas Holding. The vision is transform vast, undeveloped land into the Green Heart of Dubai a luxurious, self-contained community complete with high-end residences, abundant green spaces, and a full suite of family-friendly amenities.
The centrepiece of the Dubai Hills Estate is its sprawling 18-hole championship golf course, around which the entire community is built. To achieve the stunning, contoured landscapes envisioned for areas like Golf Place and Golf Grove, extensive modifications to the natural terrain were necessary, creating numerous cut and fill slopes.
This large-scale earthmoving made the site incredibly susceptible to soil erosion. The engineers and contractors on the project urgently needed a solution that was not only robust and structurally sound but also aesthetically pleasing. It had to stabilize these vulnerable slopes effectively, all while seamlessly integrating with the estate’s modern luxury design and supporting the lush landscaping that defines the area.
Solution
Maccaferri Middle East stepped in with a brilliant solution, their MacWall system. This system cleverly combined Terraforce concrete blocks with MacGrid WG geogrid soil reinforcement.
This approach offered the best of both worlds exceptional strength and the flexibility needed to build retaining walls up to an impressive 3.2 meters high. The modular design of the Terraforce blocks meant they could construct curved, tapered, and vertical walls with ease, ensuring a perfect, seamless blend with the estate’s luxurious landscape design.
The implementation of the MacWall system delivered significant advantages. Most importantly, it provided a vigorous, long-term fix for erosion control, successfully stabilizing those vulnerable slopes. Aesthetically, the blocks appealing rock face finish, thoughtfully combined with strategic planting, created a beautiful, natural look that significantly enhanced the surroundings. It was a sustainable, smart choice that perfectly aligned with the estate’s green focus. In fact, the project’s resounding success led to the consistent specification and use of these same Terraforce blocks throughout other sections of the development.
