AL BAYT STADIUM
Problem
Al Bayt Stadium, which hosted the world’s top football players during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, features a giant tent-like structure that covers the entire stadium, paying homage to the traditional Bedouin tents of the region. Located in the northern city of Al Khor, the stadium has a seating capacity of 60,000 spectators. In addition to the stadium itself, an extensive development project included the construction of new roads and bridges. Steep reinforced fill was required for the approach to the bridge entrance, necessitating the use of a stepped retaining structure.
Solution
From the retaining wall options available in the Maccaferri portfolio, the client selected the Macwall system with a Keystone block fascia. The soil reinforcement used in the project was ParaGrid HF 100. Macwall is a modular block wall system that features dry cast, thin fascia elements, combined with soil reinforcement geogrids. These geogrids are connected to the fascia using fiberglass pins. This type of segmental block wall, reinforced with geogrids, is particularly cost-effective in fill situations, where there is ample space to lay out the geogrid to the required anchor length without the need to excavate natural materials. ParaGrid HF is a specialized geogrid designed for soil reinforcement. It is manufactured from high molecular weight, high-tenacity polyester multifilament yarns. This coating enhances the geogrid’s durability, ensuring that it can withstand mechanical stresses and remain chemically stable over time. The combination of Keystone blocks and ParaGrid HF offered a highly effective solution that met both the structural and economic needs of the project.
