KASTAMONU-CANKIRI ROAD (ILGAZ TUNNEL)
Problem
The Kastamonu-Cankiri Road project under the responsibility of Cengiz İnşaat San ve Tic A.S. Comprised of several areas with rockfall problems. From a total surface area of 13.450 m² small to medium sized rocks were loosening from the slope and creating safety problems. After re-shaping the critical slopes into more stable dimensions, rock material was still detaching from the surface due to atmospheric influence and were rolling/falling onto the road. As a consequence of the above mentioned rockfall problems our technical team visited the project site and established a protection design strategy taking into account important site properties and previous rockfall occasions.
Solution
As a result of the geotechnical calculations the installation of Wire Mesh with a tensile strength of 50 kN/m was seen sufficient for holding the small to medium sized rock materials in place and preventing them from falling onto the road. Taking the height of the slope with approxiametly 85m into account, the constant contact between mesh and slope was secured by 0.7m long anchorages installed in a 5x5m pattern. Additionally, the wire mesh was fixed on each step of the slope with a 12mm wire rope.
