Marginal Protection for the Tonameca River

Problem

The population of San Isidro del Palmar is located in the lower part of the Tonameca River basin, just a few kilometers from its mouth at the Pacific Ocean. In recent years, significant increases in Tonameca River floods have been recorded, particularly during hydro-meteorological events such as hurricanes. The most recent one in 2022, named Agatha, caused significant damage due to the flooding of the communities near the riverbed.

Solution

Emergency actions such as dredging and the establishment of temporary embankments were implemented. Subsequently, hydrological and topographic studies were conducted, leading to the project for marginal protection on the right bank of the Tonameca River, which included: – Construction of a compacted embankment using 2:1 slope bench material, with a height of 6.5 meters and a 4-meter crest. – Marginal lining using reinforced gabion mat with a thickness of 0.5 meters.
