Gabion Defense – Cajuca East Corridor

Problem

Given the events following the El Niño phenomenon in 1998, the Nazca Valley has been affected by river overflow and ravines. The high vulnerability to overflowing on the right bank of the natural drain in the Cajuca area of the Nazca district poses a latent danger to the entire population of the populated centers Cajuca I, II, and Buena Fe.

Solution

The Provincial Municipality of Nazca was in charge of the technical file through its technical study department. The hydraulic approach they determined as a solution is the dredging and channeling through a river defense structure with gabions and an anti-undermining base of 1,300 meters on the right bank of the natural drain of Cajuca. Maccaferri provided technical advice to the Cajuca consortium, responsible for the execution of the project, in order to ensure the optimal functionality of the project and the completion of the construction process.
