Maccaferri achieve the ETA and the CE marking for the rockfall barriers: RB 1500 and RMC 050 ICAT/2

Following stringent testing in accordance with the European Test and Approval Guideline 27 (ETAG27) of the European Organization for Technical Approvals (EOTA), Maccaferri has been awarded theEuropean Technical Approval (ETA) for its RB 1500 (ETA n.12/0396 ) and RMC 050 ICAT/2 (ETA(n.12/0455) ) rockfall barriers. Furthermore, subsequent detailed manufacturing, supply andassembly systems quality checking has allowed the award of the CE mark (quality standard) for thebarrier systems. 

The common main strengths are that both rockfall barriers can be installed onto any rock or soilslope in a quick and easy manner even under severe environmental conditions. Moreover thesesystems require a minimal maintenance. While the RB 1500 system has been carefully developed toensure the anchorages require the lowest possible pull out resistances, meaning that shorter andcheaper anchorages can be used for the fence, reducing installation costs, the RMC 050 ICAT/2system has no upslope bracing ropes or anchorages which considerably reduces materialrequirements and drilling time on site. Another difference among the systems concerns the maininterception structure that for the RB 1500 barrier consists of steel ring panels whereas for the RMC050 ICAT/2 of a high strength geocomposite mesh reinforced with high tensile steel ropes. 

Both barriers exceed the most stringent requirements of the ETAG 27 and achieve a category Aperformance rating. The impact tests were conducted in the Belluno region of the Italian Dolomites.In the main MEL (Maximum Energy Level) impact test, the results recorded for the two barriers areas follows:

A dynamic rockfall barrier system which has been tested in accordance with ETAG 027 providesconfidence to clients and designers that the rockfall protection kit has been independently testedand assessed, in accordance with a rigorous set of guidelines to ensure standards of quality andperformance. The ETAG Certification process is open to all companies, regardless of nationality andlocation. Assessed barriers which meet the criteria are awarded a European Technical Approval(ETA) for the individual barrier. Additionally, barrier performance data, collected during the full scaleimpact tests required for ETAG 27, are used by engineers during the design process. 

Maccaferri’s other dynamic rockfall barriers from 500kJ to 5000kJ (MEL) have already been tested inaccordance with the ETAG 27 of the European Organization for Technical Approvals (EOTA), andhave been awarded an ETA and CE Marking for the barriers. 

Maccaferri is currently waiting to be issued the ETA certification and CE marking for the RMC 850/Arockfall barrier (8500 kJ MEL class 8 according to ETAG 027) tested during summer 2012.
