Problem

The application of geosynthetics was done in the final capping landfill project of the ARISTOTELIS Municipality in Halkidiki. This is a project of great importance over the wider area of the Municipality, as the landfill is the final destination of the waste after collection. It was very important to rehabilitate the landfill after the waste disposal in order to to avoid or at least minimize any danger of environmental pollution from the uncovered landfill.

Solution

Maccaferri’s geosynthetics were applied in 3 different areas of the Municipality according to the project’s design. Geomembrane and drainage composite application was in an area called MEGALI PANAGIA in the following order starting from the waste: 1) Soil material 20 cm (leveling layer) 2) Geomembrane Macline SDH100 (sealing layer) 3) Drainage composite MacDrain W1060 (drainage of rain water layer) 4) Soil material 70 cm 5) Plant soil 30 cm and plants. The second area of application was near ARNAIA where the order of geosynthetics was respectively: 1) Soil material 20 cm (leveling layer) 2) Geosynthetic clay liner Macline GCL W20 (sealing layer ) 3) Soil material 70 cm 4) Plant soil 30 cm and plants. The third area of application was near the village IERISSOS where the order of geosynthetics was respectively: 1) Soil material 20 cm (leveling layer) 2) Geosynthetic clay liner Macline GCL W20 (sealing layer ) 3) Soil material 30 cm 4) Geocells MacWeb E 2007.3 and hydro seeding. Moreover in the same landfill area our MacGrid WG4 geogrid was used in order to reinforce a new embankment.
