Problem
Egnatia is a 670 km long highway that connects North Eastern Greece to the North West of the country. As the construction of the main axle of Egnatia Rd has been completed, the need to create parking stations and resting areas along the road has come up. This project concerns the construction of a CAR PARK to the the North East, near the City of Ioannina. All construction will be completed by November 2013.In this case, due to lack of available space, a reinforced embankment had to be constructed in order to create the parking area.
Solution
Maccaferri Hellas has provided local authorities and the contractor with all available data on the geogrids in order to support them during the design phase of the embankment. The total quantity of the geogrids installed was 25.584 m2 (see Figs. 2, 3) The walls, where a steep (84°) facing was required, have been realized by using a mixed reinforced soil system, combining two products: gabions, combined with Paragrid 80/05, a high strength polyester geogrid encased in a durable polyethylene sheath (primary reinforcement), vertically spaced 1 m or more in some cases depending upon the design.
