CENTRAL PARK AT THE NEW CAPITAL OF EGYPT

Problem

A massive and ambitious project aimed at improving infrastructure and boosting Egypt’s economy is the New Administrative Capital. The ‘Green River’ tops the list of notable natural landmarks in this project that add beauty and vitality to the city. It has an invaluable ecological, social, and economic significance to the New Administrative Capital, making it one of the most significant water features. The Green River forms an integrated system of water bodies and captivating landscapes throughout the new city. The original landscape design of the Green River project calls for tiered retaining walls along the banks. As the recreation area in the project will be located at this location, the retaining walls must be natural and aesthetically pleasing.

Solution

Maccaferri’s Terramesh MSE Wall system was used in the project as landscaping retaining walls. Terramesh units meet the landscape architectural requirement because the gabion face can be filled with local limestones. To achieve alternate levels of stone facing and vegetation, the benches of the tiered wall could be planted with local vegetation. Terramesh’s gabion facing is flexible and porous, allowing plantations to receive continuous irrigation without experiencing excessive porewater pressure within the backfill soil. The retaining walls were required to have a life expectancy of 120 years. Considering this stringent design life criteria, the Terramesh system’s superior Polimac coating and its external certifications helped its stakeholders approve it. Maccaferri’s local agent ‘Strata Soil System’ was subcontracted for the project’s design, supply, and construction assistance of the Terramesh MSE wall.
