Pavel Potapov, Business Development Director at Maccaferri Gabions CIS, gave an interview for "360° Moscow region" channel where he talked about pressing issues of household and industrial waste disposal.
The regional channel for residents of Moscow Oblast, "360° Moscow region" conducts an interesting project called "Interview 360", in which famous politicians, officials of federal and Moscow Oblast government, but also business representatives, answer urgent questions, comment on important domestic and international events, express their opinions on the topics most widely discussed by the general public.
Pavel Potapov gave an interview about modern technologies for designing solid household waste dumps within the framework of the international exhibition "ECOTECH 2016". It is aimed at presenting new ecological solutions in the sphere of waste management, industrial water purification, and innovative green technologies. At the stand of Moscow Oblast Ministry of ecology and environmental management, Maccaferri presented a model reflecting a flowchart for reclamation of industrially changed lands and municipal waste dumps.
Nowadays reclamation of disturbed lands is the most burning issue in the Russian Federation because the share of industrially polluted territories has reached a critical point. The need for environmental rehabilitation of polluted territories is closely connected with the problem of reclamation of large municipal waste dumps. The capacity of many of them is exceeded and the established regulations for their arrangement are often disregarded.
Taking into consideration the main problems of the majority of current landfills, Maccaferri has developed a flowchart for reclamation of municipal waste dumps, which allows:
- to lower the burden on the ecosystem through eliminating harmful emissions into the environment;
- to reduce a dump to its assigned boundaries without decreasing waste soil storage capacity by means of using retaining walls;
- to increase a dump's storage capacity through using geosynthetic materials. Substitution of mineral damp-proof and drainage layers (clay and gravel) for geosynthetic materials allows to save up to 0.8 m capacity for a square meter, which gives 8,000 cubic meters of additional storage for each hectare of the dump's area.
- to increase sustainability and extend the lifespan of a dump with the use of geosynthetic materials that are inert and resistant to aggressive environment.
