Continuous operation of the hydropower plant requires maintaining unhindered the flow of traffic on access roads and a safe work environment for the plant personnel.

Engineered protection from natural hazards is a key factor in preventing hydropower plant accidents. Hydroelectric projects are frequently constructed in mountainous terrain, highly susceptible to rock slides and rockfalls. Maccaferri offers a suite of solutions for protecting the area against hazardous geological processes. These solutions have been successfully applied in the construction of the Boguchany and Gotsatlin hydroelectric power plants.

Boguchany hydroelectric power station on the Angara River in Kodinsk:

Constructors faced a problem of rocky slope failures when building the Boguchany hydroelectric power station on the Angara River. Disrupted transport connection due to frequent rockfalls might have resulted in missed construction deadlines, so there was a need to ensure safe operation of the station's access road and, predominantly, the building. The Boguchany station was protected using Maccaferri's Steelgrid HR system for rockfall mitigation and slope consolidation works and features our steel wire woven hexagonal mesh with integral high tensile steel cables every 150 cm.

Gotsatlin hydroelectric power plant in the Republic of Dagestan (Russia):

The Gotsatlin hydroelectric power plant in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia was protected using an innovative complete system combining a drapery system and rockfall barriers. Maccaferri Dynamic rockfall barriers were installed on the natural slope, prone to rocks detaching and falling.

The barriers feature a patented technology: compression brakes. Under a rockfall impact with the barrier, these brakes compress, enabling the progressive absorption of the rockfall impact. This generates a more even load distribution across the barrier components and minimize the stress imposed upon them and the barrier foundations. Unlike certain friction based energy absorption brakes, the performance of our compression brakes is not compromised by corrosion or debris caught in the friction mechanism which can lead to an inconsistent absorption performance.

Maccaferri also offers a package of rockfall design software to calculate rockfall mitigation measures including rockfall drapery and surface stabilisation systems. Maccaferri Russia’s engineering project group has been successful in solving problems associated with rockfall hazards at hydroelectric power plants by designing mitigation solutions in accordance with the clients requirements.
