The importance of geosynthetics use by road divisions of Siberia and the Extreme North.
The scientists of Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution, Higher Professional Education and the SIBADI (Siberian State Automobile and Highway Academy) organized and held last October the research and practice conference “Use of geosynthetics by road divisions of Siberia and the Extreme North” involving professionals and academics from all over Russia, with the support of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, the Federal Road Agency and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research in Novosibirsk.
The aim of the conference was to find the ways and develop practical solutions for the intensification of use of geosynthetics (geotextiles and geomembranes) in the road sector in Siberia and the Extreme North and make all stakeholders involved fully understand the potential of Geosynthetics to improve the quality and longevity of roads.
The head of Maccaferri Geosynthetics, Liya V. Potudanskaya, made a presentation on “Application of Maccaferri technologies for construction of road infrastructure facilities”.
The main theme of the presentation was the successful experience of use of MacMat Geomat designed for rapid containment of erosion processes in the surface layers of the slopes. Some expertise about the successful use of MacMat R were brought to the audience as follows:
• Reconstruction of landslide protection of Volga slope on Fyodorovskogo Embankment in Nizhny Novgorod.
• Protection of Tobolsk Kremlin slopes against erosion processes.
• Protection of excavation slopes against erosion processes at the section of the road Aktanysh — Poisevo in the Republic of Tatarstan.
The second part of the report was devoted to the use of planar geogrid MacGrid WG as part of the reinforced ground MacWall system. This design is an exclusive patented technology of Maccaferri. Dozens of retaining walls were built in the framework of road and bridge constructions on the territory of the Russian Federation using the MacWall system including:
• The abutments of bridges in Odintsovo at the exit to the Ring Road from the federal highway M-1 “Belarus” Moscow — Minsk.
• The two-level interchange "Airport" on the federal highway “Adler — Krasnaya Polyana”.
Summing up the results of the conference, the participants and representatives of the Russian companies noted the relevance and high importance of the raised topics for development of the Russian industrial sector. Given the increased interest in the problems and prospects of use of geological materials in the construction, the conference participants expressed a desire to regularly hold such themed events for experts of Siberia and the Extreme North.
