Sinking Zone Mitigation at Gangtok, Sikkim, India
The Military Engineer Services (MES) premises located along NH31 in Gangtok, Sikkim adopted Maccaferri’s innovative and sustainable solutions.
Maccaferri’s sustainable solutions for slope stabilization, road retention, and drainage management were implemented for sinking zone mitigation in Gangtok, Sikkim.
The Military Engineer Services (MES) premises in Gangtok, located along NH31, rest on a sinking zone and face challenges due to steep slopes, rugged terrain, and clayey soil. At an altitude of 1,650 meters in the eastern Himalayas, the area is prone to landslides, erosion, and slope instability. Additionally, being in a high seismic zone and experiencing heavy monsoons increases the risk of infrastructure damage.
To address these challenges, Maccaferri’s innovative and sustainable solutions were adopted by MES. For slope stabilization, prestressed multistrand cable anchors and a combination of self-drilling anchors with high performance geomat (MacMat HS) and Hydraulically applied erosion control measures were installed at multiple locations. For toe slope stabilization, Cruciform-shaped umbrella structures (ErdoX Terra) was provided near bottom road. For road retention, a reinforced soil structure with Green facia (Green Terramesh System) and monoaxial geogrid (Paralink) was constructed near bottom road. For surface and sub-surface drainage management, drainage geocomposite (MacDrain), non-woven geotextile (MacTex) and Gabion Mattress were used. With the completion of these measures, the project has successfully enhanced slope stability, mitigated erosion risks, and safeguarded vital infrastructure in this challenging terrain.
