Gabions

"The Farm" is a new master plan community on the east end of Ventura, California. It consists in a new townhouse development located in Saticoy, an unincorporated community in a rare, rural setting among fields of flowers and citrus orchards. The development extends between South Saticoy Ave. and Blackburn Road, and from Telegraph Road to Los Altos Street. Due to the new construction of the development, paved roads and urbanization of the area, a new drainage system was required to collect and control the waters during rains and flood events. The primary project challenge was finding a technically sound solution able to stand the water velocities into the channel preventing soils from been eroded, able to withstand potential differential settlements and trying to maintain a natural aesthetic look.

Adjacent to the village of Downderry the beach was affected by erosion. Tidal action undermined the toe of the cliff and threatened to cause a major slip. Properties, including a Hotel, were endangered by possible subsidence.

For many years there had been severe erosion to the north bank of the River Humber at Brough, which is some ten miles to the west of Hull. Much of the land at Brough is below the level of ordinary spring tides in the Humber, and the agricultural land, together with the main railway line to Hull, an aircraft factory, and a timber yard are protected by an earthen flood embankment. Erosion continued and the Hull and East Yorkshire River Board considered a number of schemes. It eventually agreed that the remedial works should comprise about 1000 yd. of half tide wall, and a similar length of gabion revetment.
