Retaining Wall Solution for Hucknall Primary School Amalgamation, Nottinghamshire

Challenge

In 2005, the Nottinghamshire School Organisation Committee approved the amalgamation of Hucknall Spring Street Primary School and Whyburn Primary School to form a new community school in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. This major school redevelopment project required the construction of a large building extension alongside significant remodelling of the existing Whyburn School facilities and surrounding grounds.

Due to the site’s challenging topography, a 1.7-metre-high retaining wall was required adjacent to the new school extension. Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) initially proposed a traditional brick-faced, cast in-situ reinforced concrete retaining wall. However, this approach raised concerns regarding construction time, labour intensity, and overall project costs.

With a tight construction programme and strict budget constraints, NCC sought an innovative retaining wall system that could deliver structural performance, faster installation, and a high-quality architectural finish suitable for an educational environment.

Solution

Following a detailed cost and programme assessment, NCC selected the MacWall Diamond segmental retaining wall system as a modern, cost-effective alternative to traditional concrete construction.

The MacWall Diamond system is a dry-built, mortarless retaining wall solution that combines durable concrete facing units with geogrid-reinforced soil technology. The Anchor Diamond blocks provide an attractive, uniform appearance while ensuring structural reliability through a rear lip locator connection system.

The wall structure is reinforced using horizontal layers of BBA-certified geogrid (Paragrid 80/15s), installed within compacted granular backfill. This reinforced soil retaining wall design creates a stable mass that distributes loads effectively while maintaining flexibility.

Unlike conventional reinforced concrete retaining walls, the MacWall system does not require a concrete foundation. Instead, it is constructed on a compacted granular levelling pad, significantly reducing construction time and material costs. The mortarless design also allows for slight differential movement, preventing cracking and improving long-term durability.

Additional benefits of the MacWall Diamond retaining wall system include off-site manufactured components for consistent quality control and reduced reliance on skilled labour, such as bricklayers. This made it an ideal solution for projects with tight deadlines and budget requirements.

The retaining wall installation was completed by C&BR Construction Ltd, working as a subcontractor to Bodill Construction of Nottingham. The project was delivered efficiently, meeting all structural, aesthetic, and financial objectives.
