Morfa Nefyn Golf Club Cliff Edge
Problem
Morfa Nefyn Golf Course is located on the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd, North Wales and is surrounded by the Irish Sea. The Ty Coch Inn public house is located at the bottom of a vegetated cliff face alongside other properties situated on Traeth Porthdinllaen beach. The cliff face was susceptible to rock debris separating from the cliff face and falling onto the properties below causing damage and a risk to the safety of tourists and residents alike. It was proposed to install a rockfall netting drapery system to contain falling debris and thereby protect the properties at the foot of the cliff face.
Solution
Maccaferri was contacted by specialist rockfall contractors Colin Jones Rock Engineering Ltd and asked to supply a drapery mesh that would be able to provide a 120-year design life in a coastal environment that may be subject to salt spray. Maccaferri proposed the use of Polimac coated double twist rockfall netting which is BBA certified with a 120-year design life in very highly aggressive environmental conditions. The DT rockfall netting was installed and connected to a crest rope and also had rock anchors intermittently installed across the whole cliff face to stabilize the slope surface.
The PoliMacĀ® coating is an innovative polymer developed by Maccaferri to produce an enhanced performance against abrasion, adverse temperature, chemical attack and UV degradation. Testing has revealed that PoliMac will outperform traditional PVC coatings by anything up to a factor of 10. PoliMacĀ® is inert, does not contain any harmful chemicals and does not emit chlorine gas during the manufacturing process which makes it a more environmentally friendly alternative to PVC whilst offering a premium level of corrosion resistance.
