M49 Junction Bristol Ground Improvement and Reinforced Soil Solutions

Challenge

The M49 motorway, linking the M4 and M5 in South West England, plays a key role in supporting access to Bristol Port and Avonmouth, one of the UK’s key logistics and industrial hubs. To unlock one of Europe’s largest brownfield development sites and stimulate economic growth and employment, a new motorway junction was required to improve connectivity for existing warehouses, distribution centres, and future developments.

The project involved the construction of a complex highway infrastructure scheme, including an elevated roundabout spanning the M49, two bridges, and four slip roads providing access to both northbound and southbound traffic. An existing bridge structure needed to be incorporated into the design, while a second bridge was constructed alongside it. The scheme also included a dedicated pedestrian and cycle path, segregated from vehicular traffic to enhance safety and accessibility.

A major engineering challenge was presented by poor ground conditions across the site. The subsurface profile consisted of a 1-metre layer of desiccated clay overlying soft alluvial soils, with competent mudstone located at depths of 7 to 9 metres. These weak soils created a high risk of excessive and differential settlement, particularly beneath embankments and bridge approaches. A robust ground engineering solution was therefore essential to ensure long-term stability, durability, and performance of the new junction infrastructure.

Solution

To overcome the geotechnical challenges, a comprehensive ground improvement and reinforced soil solution was implemented. Concrete-controlled modulus columns were installed through the soft alluvial layers and founded into the underlying mudstone, providing a stable load-bearing foundation. In combination with in-situ wick drains, this approach accelerated soil consolidation and reduced long-term settlement risks.

Above the improved ground, ParaLink® high-strength geogrid was installed as basal reinforcement to the embankments. This low-strain geogrid, manufactured and supplied by Maccaferri Ltd, was used in strengths of up to 1500 kN/m to distribute loads efficiently and minimise differential settlement. The use of geogrid reinforcement was critical in enhancing embankment stability and ensuring long-term performance under traffic loading.

Maccaferri collaborated closely with Arup (scheme engineer) and Galliford Try (main contractor) to design and deliver back-to-back reinforced soil embankments supporting the slip roads and elevated roundabout. These reinforced soil slopes, constructed at a steep 70° face angle, provided a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to traditional retaining structures. The slopes were vegetated with native species, improving biodiversity and delivering an environmentally sensitive solution.

The reinforced soil embankments ranged from 2 metres to 10 metres in height and significantly reduced the need for imported fill material by approximately 40%. This not only lowered project costs but also reduced construction traffic and its impact on surrounding communities. For the bridge abutments, up to 10 metres high, Maccaferri’s MacWall segmental reinforced soil wall system was used, delivering a durable, structurally efficient, and aesthetically pleasing facing solution.

This integrated ground engineering approach enabled the successful delivery of the M49 junction project in Bristol, transforming access to a key development area while demonstrating the effectiveness of geogrid reinforcement, ground improvement techniques, and reinforced soil structures in challenging ground conditions.
